Asian Adventures - Sukhothai, Thailand

Arriving in Sukhothai it is so different from Bangkok! So much quieter and buildings are a lot more sparse. When we arrived at the bus station there were no taxis in sight. A women came rushing over from a Tuk Tuk and said she could take us to our guesthouse. She charged 400 Baht for a 10/15 minute drive which was probably a rip off but it was the only 'taxi' around and it gave us our first experience in a Tuk Tuk which was fun.

Our guesthouse was a lot different from our hotel in Bangkok and we weren't quite sure what we had signed up for. When we arrived at reception there was no one there for a good 10 minutes which was very strange. We went for a wander round the downstairs looking for someone and calling out for someone but no luck. Just as we were getting ready to call their contact number a women rocked up on her mop'ed and checked us in. The room was basic and not the cleanest so I was already slightly regretting our accommodation choice. The saving grace was the fact the place had a massive pool which we had all to ourselves as we were the only guests that night. We relaxed there for a couple of hours which was nice after our long bus journey.

For tea we wandered across the road to find a cute restaurant with a pond in the middle of it. We chose a table on the grass so we could sit by the pond.

As part of our meal I ordered soup with glass noodles and minced pork. Basically pretty close to chicken noodle soup. I thought it would be a small starter size portion but it was huge!! It was delicious but way too much for me to finish.
Thankfully, we had finished our meal when the heavens opened and it started pouring it down! We had to make a dash undercover. It didn't look like it was going to stop anytime soon so the restaurant lent us an umbrella for going back to our guesthouse which was really sweet of them. We were going to just make a run for it but they were insistent and said we could return it tomorrow.

Our first night's sleep was interesting. The bed was so hard so it was really uncomfortable and we had spied two lizards crawling about the walls. I don't really mind lizards but it's not a great thought to think of waking up to find a lizard in bed with you! We both didn't get a lot of sleep that night.

On our only full day in Sukhothai we rented bikes at The Sukhothai Historical Park and went to have a look around old temple ruins and Buddha statues. Thank god we rented bikes as the park was huge! It was also great to get a breeze whilst cycling around. There were lots of insects around in the heat and I didn't want to add to my already extensive insect bite collection.

The ruins and statues were incredible. The details and designs on them were amazing! When walking through the ruins it reminds me of all the ruins in The Jungle Book at the part when Mowgali first encounters King Louis. The Buddha states were really spectacular. Most of them were pretty big but the biggest in the park stood at 50ft! It was really worth seeing!

We headed back to the hotel in the afternoon to spend it by the pool. Unfortunately for me I had just realised I'd burnt both my arms! Brilliant!
We were so glad the guesthouse had a pool as apart from The Historical Park there isn't really an awful lot else to do and we didn't want to just sit in our room as as I said before the room isn't the cleanest.

At night we headed down into the centre of the Old Town to find somewhere to eat.
We had an early bus to catch to Chiang Mai the next day. We were both so excited to get out of this guesthouse!!
