Cocktails in the City - Mansfield Traquair Church

Image
Last Thursday Cocktails in the City was held at Mansfield Traquair Church on Mansfield Road. Lots of cocktail bars around Edinburgh set up mini bars around the church for you to sample one of their cocktails from their menu. Edinburgh bars taking part in the event included Harvey Nichols 4th Floor, Panda & Sons and 56 North.                                                                                                      I had never been inside the church before the event and it was...

Oktoberfest, Princes Street Gardens

Image
One evening a couple of weeks ago I headed along to Princes Street Gardens to an Oktoberfest event that was taking place in marquees in the gardens.   The marquee was filled with rows of tables and benches with people sitting drinking beers and eating traditional German food. At the bottom of the tent a German band were playing dressed in full lederhosen's which added to the great atmosphere!                                                                                                    ...

Edinburgh Zoo

Image
As today is the first day of Autumn I wanted to share an event I attended back in the summer at Edinburgh Zoo. The event was called Edinburgh Zoo Nights where as well as all the animals to see there was also live music, comedy performances and food and drink stands to keep you occupied throughout the night.                                                                                                                     ...

Lebowskis and Henry's Cellar Bar, Morrison Street

Image
I thought I would share with you all a night out I had with my flatmates just before Christmas. We went out for a pub night to Lebowskis and ended our night down stairs from there at Henry's Cellar Bar. Both are on Morrison Street just off Lothian Road.                           The bar had a very relaxed atmosphere and was a great place to spend a night with good friends. They had a specials menu on with a selection of cocktails to choose from that me and my friends took full advantage of, as shown in the picture above. We were there on a Thursday night and the bar was surprisingly quiet but it could have just been because it was a week night as I'm sure the weekends are much more busy. When we were there we just had drinks, however I have heard they do great burgers so will need to go again and try them out.       After our cocktails we moved on to wine. I was shocked when I wen...

Michael Neave, Old Fishmarket Close

Image
Whilst browsing through the internet, I discovered an excellent restaurant called Michael Neave with a great express lunch menu. The restaurant is on Old Fishmarket Close, just off the Royal Mile. The restaurant itself is quite costly for food which makes the £7.95 lunch menu an even better deal! The menu changes daily so it gives you the chance to try out new dishes every time you go. There are three choices of starters and main courses and for dessert you get a coffee and a brownie. You have the option to take away your dessert which is a benefit if you have to head off somewhere quickly after your lunch. For starter I chose the salmon which came in a sushi roll style with salmon pate and smoked salmon rolled together. It was delicious! For main I chose the chicken and again it tasted lovely. I was really looking forward to coming here and it didn't disappoint. Since I don't have much of a sweet tooth I gave my friends my brownie to shar...

Tigerlily, George Street

Image
One of my favourite cocktail bars in Edinburgh has to be Tigerlily on George Street. I went there for my 18th birthday and couldn't wait to go again! They have a great menu filled with lots of different combinations of cocktails to choose from. The cocktails range from £7 to £9 and there are also sharing punches you can get to share between a group of you. The bar has a relaxed atmosphere where you could go for after work drinks to relax or have a catch up with your friends. Tigerlily have an 'After Work Club' where from Tuesday-Friday selected cocktails are only £3.95 and a glass of wine is £2.95. The deal is aimed at workers going for drinks after work but it's a great deal that students can make use of too! Going to Tigerlily is a great excuse to get dressed up, grab your girlfriends and have a cocktail........or two!!

The Tower Restaurant, Chambers Street

Image
Back in August, which seems like forever ago now that the temperature has dropped, my family and I went to The Tower restaurant inside the Museum of Scotland. It was a treat from my parents for my sister who had received her higher exam results that day. As you may think the food is fairly expensive and not somewhere I would go with my student friends but it was a great experience to go when I wasn't paying!! The food was absolutely gorgeous and there were a wide range of choice on the menu. I went for soup of the day to start which was tomato that day. I was greeted with a large bowl of thick and flavoursome soup that I didn't want to end. For main I had the lasagne and as you can see from the picture above that I broke the number one blogging rule when taking pictures of food, to take it before you finish! This illustrates how good I thought the food was that I couldn't wait to dive in forgetting about any pictures I was going to take.  Another asset of the re...

The Cowshed, Cowgate

Image
Taking advantage of all the free shows at The Fringe Festival I found myself being persuaded to attend one in a venue on the Cowgate whilst on my way with friends to a pub. The show itself was not great, the downside to some free shows, but it did mean I found out about a venue beside it that had turned itself into a barn. Inside the 'barn' were hay bales and tractor tyres to use as seating as well as wooden tables to rest your drinks on. There were different country bands playing on a stage through out the evening which were perfect to listen to as back ground music or there was an area in front of the stage for people to stand and watch the bands also. The Cowshed was such a good change from a regular bar or pub and it is somewhere I could see still being popular after the festival finishes. I am a massive fan of live music so I love anywhere you can go and see some, be it at a concert or just sitting in a bar. This is a great place to try for somewhere different to go...

The Pommery Champagne Bar

Image
Last  week myself and my two friends decided to try out The Pommery Champagne Cafe Bar in the Signet Library just off the Royal Mile. It’s just a pop up for the festival but there will be another restaurant to fill the space after August. My friend’s uncle is the chef there so we were fortunate enough to receive VIP cards to get discount on our meal and some free champagne courtesy of  him too. Although The Champagne Bar is quite expensive, the food there is absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth going to treat yourself! They have champagne cocktails, burgers and lobster to take your fancy so head along soon to enjoy it before the end of the festival.
